The bag we want – at the right price!
The next bag on my hot list is the Loewe Amazona in black suede. Perfect for daily use and coloured in rich coal black that travels well and easily hides little signs of wear.
But at retail prices closing on USD2,500- for a standard 36″ in black suede, it’s worth stopping to think of the value of such a purchase, and whether there are options for us to own our desired duds at much better prices.
Below are 3 thoughts to pinpoint our perfect bag – at the right price!
Designer goods are expensive and we’re paying for the history, craftsmanship and millions of dollars the brand spends on hiring the most experienced and talented people to work within their company, as well as all the other factors.
Even with this in mind, it’s important to get the best value for our buck, and know that the quality means this item will be with us for many years to come – giving us good cost-per-wear value. (Price divided by number of times worn = cost per wear).
1. Yes! Luxury resale sites online
These brilliant shops of the internet generation offer pre-loved items in almost perfect condition from around the world. Fancy a Birkin? Or a limited edition LV bag or speedy? Chances are that someone somewhere has one for sale. Is your perfect bag to be found there?
With prices coming in at half or less than retail prices, instalment plans available for select countries, continuing the life of a fashion item, and the added benefit of having to WAIT and excercise discipline for that perfect piece, there is a very strong argument for stepping over into the realm of luxury fashion resale sites.
So, with the price down substantially from buying pre-owned… lets look at other aspects of buying any designer bag…
2. Is it in my lifestyle luxury area of choice?
This is a fun concept that I saw in The Simple Dollar, one of my favourite email subscriptions. It suggests choosing the area of life that you appreciate luxury in the most. Food? Travel? Housing? Fashion? And then being more frugal in other areas that don’t bring as much joy.
With a little thought I realise if I had to scrimp on other areas to buy fab fashion I love, I’d probably be pretty nonplussed about it. And that begs the question – why not be more economical in a lot of other areas, and just appreciate the luxury in the areas we actually love most?
This apparently has the double whammy effect of releasing more cash for the luxury area, as well as increasing our gratitude for the area of choice because we’re deciding to practice thoughtfulness in other areas. It can also make us more thoughtful about the luxury area too. And as an effect more appreciative of other blessings in our lives.
With fashion – and Loewe Amazona’s – falling under this category for me, as we explored in a previous post (read it and see where your areas are!) this is a YES, and I am willing to wait until I see a great quality black suede amazona on one of the sites listed above to purchase.
3. Is it practical? Will I wear it often?
For many designer items, this is a NO – some are silly and impractical and just don’t get much wear as a result. They’re best seen on instagram, not coveted for wearing every day / night. Fortunately for me, the Loewe Amazona 36″ is an immensely practical bag – storing quite a large amount while simultaneously looking sleekly stylish.
One day I’d love to own the larger duffel size in black suede as well, for use when travelling and going to photo shoots etc; the size is large, branding inconspicuous enough not to attract attention for theft and the black means it’ll survive being stashed at random places on set. It’s also got a lock, like all Amazona’s. So practical, yes!
And that makes three!
That’s my thought checklist for making sure I’m choosing the right bag at the right price, and ensuring that I’ll love and value it for as long as possible. I don’t want to keep endlessly buying and not using / donating / not wearing items, so am on a meandering journey of self discovery to become more efficient, more conscious and more practical when it comes to my fashion.
Hopefully with the black suede Amazona by my side.
