Sharp organic sabres and thorns piercing florals that bleed rubies- renowned British jeweller Shaun Leane is a master of juxtaposing soft and sharp in a beautiful and well recognised echo of organic reality.
Remember the name Shaun Leane.
You’ve seen his work as master craftsman associate of Alexander McQueen, but may not know his name. Almost two decades of shows with other designers before launching his own brand has made this master metal craftsman an industry insider designer to buy, own, and keep – I’d say a minimum of one jewellery item for all true fashion insiders. (Similar to Maleficent costumers Seville & Aman for leather lovers).
Alexander McQueen’s friendship lives on in his designs.
With a design background that includes a 17+ year working relationship with Alexander McQueen, Shaun Leane was destined to launch an eponymous label and did so in 1999, winning the UK Jewellery Awards jewellery designer of the year four years in a row.
On how his long and close working relationship with Alexander McQueen has affected is design influence today, he says :
I’ll make a piece for one of my collections and think, ‘Lee would love that!’ Then I know it’s a winner. He’s embedded in me.
Infamy dances around his 18-carat hand crafted, diamond encrusted, armour ‘Contra Mundum’ glove, crafted over four years for Daphne Guinness and worn by Lady Gaga on both a V magazine cover and in her American Horror Story music video. (Armour lovers also check out Alexandra Fuks.) His pieces are coveted and kept; worn as iconic statement pieces that defy time or trend.
My favourites include the Japanese cherry blossom series and thankfully this artisan is collectable longer term – with some classic collections accessible years after launch, but barely ever seen on resale sites (trust me, I’ve checked). I’ll probably own a gold pair of cherry blossom earrings one day, and shall let you know all about it on instagram.
Behold the cherry blossom yummies below…
More unusual pieces are worth snapping up on the spot, for they may never be seen wearing a price tag again. Sharp and bold, they suddenly seem graceful and powerful when worn – accentuating the femininity and sensual strength of the wearer with their organic lines and contrasting textures. They may seem a bold purchase. But you’ll definitely notice them when you see them out.
And wish you were the one wearing them, perhaps?
Inspired by nature and thorns, these sculptural pieces are for fierce divas who are as covetable as rare roses – soft as silk and prickly to the touch; painful and transcendant and perfect in their beauty.
For every fashionista there are a few brands that must be owned – they will vary of course, but edgy luxury lovers must admit that Shaun Leane takes a high place on the insiders list of need-to-own statement jewellery that offers bang for its buck every single day.
With pearl studded florals, simple sabre lines or gold hook earrings seen on elegant actress Emma Watson, there’s something classic for every woman to make her own. Who knows, maybe that one special Shaun Leane piece will be more than enough.
