Grace Kelly was a graceful silver screen princess before she became a real life one.
While her dresses may have been endlessly elegant and elaborately crafted, it’s possible to take inspiration from them to create some modern everyday outfits.
These can be paired with 3/4 cropped trousers, flowing white skirts, smart shorts or favourite jeans to create a modern take on some graceful classic looks.
1. The V-neck tee
A classic favourite for all elegantessas; the simple V neck is so versatile that every princess needs one in their wardrobe. Showing enough décolletage to be sexy but not plunging enough to be impertinent, accessories play a big part of dressing this piece up or down. Wear it with big earrings and a bare neck for Elizabeth Taylor style ‘adorn me with diamonds’ vibe, a choker to show off your creamy skin, or a longer length necklace to draw the eye across the whole area.
I’d wear this tee with anything, anywhere! Paired with any bottoms and dressed up or down, its elegant neckline flatters and elevates any outfit.
2. White bustier style top
Worn with jeans in the day, shorts in summer or a flowing white pleated chiffon skirt, this strapless (or subtle strap) bustier style top will always look endlessly elegant and graceful. For a swan-like balletic presence, wear hair up in a beautiful big ballet bun and leave the neck and shoulders bare. Adorn or not as you like, for this item will stand out and wow all on its own.
3. Halter neck top
Stunning, stately and demure – perfect for accentuating beautiful wide shoulders, or for giving a look of more breadth to narrower shoulders. I love halter neck tops for their modest drama; there’s something very beautiful about the curve of feminine shoulders. Great for active days and ideal for travel, halter tops look even more delightful when a shawl is used to wrap lightly around the shoulders or hang regally over the arms.
As a curvy busty girl, I wear this halter style with underpinnings of a longline strapless bustier, longline bra or overbust corset. I find these more supportive and flattering than standard strapless bras. Though some strapless bras can come with an adjustable halter strap which is perfect for halter tops.
4. Chiffon house robe
Peachy pink is a lovely colour for most skin tones, but black is sensual and dramatic. Personally I prefer dreamy split kimono sleeves like the kind written about HERE from SingingSlowly, but they also create modern versions of this kimono sleeved Grace Kelly robe in chiffon on request.
It was a little tough to find this exact style on Amazon, though I did find this lovely black kimono sleeve top (below) and there were more dramatic draping burlesque styles like the red drape sleeve robe available in different colours (further below).
5. Pearl necklace
Triple or single strand pearls, what a dream! Pure white pearls or creamy ivory coloured, they’re the quintessential item of elegant jewellery. I personally prefer this slender Grace Kelly gradated triple strand style to the thicker, closer set Jackie O style which for some reason strikes me as much more matriarchal, austere and aging than other pearl styles.
A single strand of wonderful pearls is a great investment for anyone who loves their historic elegance – though this purchase can easily be of glass beaded pearls too!
When I buy glass pearls (which I often do because I wear a lot of perfume and perfume oils daily and this can damage the surface and shine of natural pearls) I like to choose them with knotted string like classic pearl necklaces. This gives the most beautiful drape on the neck, is most comfortable and easiest to store and travel with. Also theres less risk of the necklace popping apart like wire strung necklaces can do!
