White As An All Season Basic Foundation
Wearing white isn’t for everyone – some people don’t like it / find it too transparent / doesn’t suit their style.
Others like my dearest beloved seem to get red spaghetti sauce or red wine on themselves whenever they wear white. Even when they haven’t had any.
For those of us who can comfortably wear white and would love to wear it more regularly, it’s worth considering as a base colour.
First thing to choose is the type of white – bright, off-white, eggshell, beige?
I choose flattering off-white for everything, as bright pure white is a little too blue-toned for my skin. Off white will suit most skintones and is a little less harsh on the eye than pure white.
White can be difficult to wear for some, so if you can comfortably wear it as a primary colour I’d recommend it!
I like to consider my ability to easily wear white as a secret superpower, and friends who can’t seem to understand how my clothing stays spotless even when I eat red sauce spaghetti apparently consider it a superpower too. Of course we must celebrate this superpower!
White basics can replace / be paired with black basics.
Gasp, sacrilege! Replace our black basics with white?? Mais non!!
Never fear, we’re not recommending to get rid of, just to use whites in place of blacks once in a while.
White shorts and a white singlet, blouse or 3/4 sleeve tee are wonderful summer basics – especially paired with a pop of colour in shoes, belt, scarf or accessories. It’s fresh and floaty looking for both island and city life.
White as a base can be as impactful a go-to outfit colour than black – perhaps more so because fewer people wear it!
White leggings (faves from Varley activewear – with extra lining) or fab white trousers wear wonderfully any time of year and they’re dazzling paired with a white top and brightly coloured accessories for maximum elegance impact. I personally love to theme the colour pop to all be one colour that I’m in the mood for that day. Remember the eye will be drawn to the colour, so choose your finest favourite physical areas to showcase and flatter! Wrists are always a lovely showcase.
White for all seasons – it’s possible, and so elegant!
A white base is especially fabulous in the cooler months when used as the foundation for an impactful jacket or coat. It’s important to check whether white looks spectacular next to your skintone, as some of us will find that white doesn’t flatter us as much as colours like jewel tones or pastels.
My pale yellow hued skintone carries white well but looks far better with colour beside it (any colour except lime tones which bring out my ‘witch undertones’ as Liz Lemon said in 30 Rock.)
In my case, I’ll layer the simple white base and throw on a peachy or pink scarf and earrings for a fresh natural look, or bright red on days I feel more VA-VOOM.
Versatile and very visually impactful – especially paired with colour that makes your colours shine.
One of the best things about choosing more white as base is its versatility; paired with another primary colour its impact is exponentially multiplied. An all white outfit with black jacket and shoes or red jacket and shoes… or pink earrings, shoes and bag… the combos go on. I find white most wowing when teamed with one other complimentary theme colour that suits your personal colouring well.
So, if you’ve been wanting to wear more white, give it a go!
Now’s a great time to try and all you need are a few basic pieces – white shorts, white blouse, white trousers. You’ve probably got all the rest of the mix and match items already!
